What are the benefits of eating “Ocean Raised”® salmon?
Salmon are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Scientific Reports indicate that Omega-3 fatty acids may help in reducing the risk of heart attacks and can drive down LDL (bad) cholesterol.While all Salmon are a good source of Omega-3, based on the “USDA Nutrition Database,” “Ocean Raised”® Atlantic salmon has among the highest content of Omega-3 of all salmon.
Are antibiotics used in salmon farming?
They are used only therapeutically - to treat an illness - under the exacting supervision of a licensed veterinarian. This is followed by a strict government established and regulated withdrawal period to ensure the utmost consumer safety. Camanchaca complies strictly with United States FDA and United Nations FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) rules on the use of medicine.
What do farmed salmon eat?
A typical diet for farmed salmon consists of feed comprised of fishmeal, plant proteins and fish oil. All ingredients are free from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Trace amounts of an FDA approved carotenoid are added to provide the pink-red of the salmon flesh.
Is Salmon Farming an environmentally sound and sustainable industry?
Yes. “Ocean Raised”® salmon have one of the best feed conversion rates of any agricultural animal - with approximately 1.2 lbs of feed converting into 1 lb of salmon. Camanchaca meets and exceeds all government regulations pertaining to the operation of its salmon farms. All ocean sites are positioned in areas with strong currents and deep waters. The sites are regularly fallowed. Computer controlled feeding stations ensure that the salmon get enough feed, and that no feed is wasted.
What are some differences between “Ocean Raised”® farmed salmon and wild salmon?
“Ocean Raised”® salmon are nurtured by professional aquaculturists and veterinarians. All aspects are controlled and regulated for quality and consistency.Wild pacific salmon run free. Eighty percent of the commercial fishery happens annually from May through August. Because of this intense volume (millions of fish) in such a short period of time, quality fresh wild salmon is available only during the summer. It is also why the majority of wild salmon are marketed canned, frozen or smoked.
Why are Pier 33 Gourmet Mussels closed if they are fully cooked and pasteurized?
Pier 33 Gourmet Mussels are harvested, cleaned and graded then vacuum sealed and cooked. Because they are tightly sealed in the bag, the mussels remain closed until heated.
Some Mussels remained closed after heating – are they safe to eat?
Yes. All Pier 33 Gourmet mussels have been fully cooked at the processing plant. Unopened mussels can be opened and eaten.
Can I use Pier 33 Mussels in Paella or any other recipe that calls for fresh mussels?
Yes. Always keep in mind that Pier 33 Mussels are already fully cooked and only need to be reheated. Therefore you should take care not to “overcook” the mussels, and incorporate them in the recipe giving them enough time to reheat and open – they do not need as much time as a fresh mussel.
Can I eat Pier 33 Gourmet Mussel Meat cold?
Yes. Pier 33 Mussels Meat is also fully cooked. You can reheat or thaw and serve with lemon and cocktail sauce.
Why are some mussel meats orange?
Females have an orange color, males are a lighter tan color.
What does rope-cultured mean?
Pier 33 Gourmet Mussels are raised on a long-line in the clean Antarctic waters of Southern Chile. The Long Lines are supported by a series of small floats, joined by a cable or chain and anchored at the bottom of the ocean. Mussel on ropes are suspended on the lines, and harvested when they reach optimum size. Because they are suspended in the water, there is never sand in Pier 33 Gourmet Mussels.
